Understanding the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets out the learning and development stages for children from birth to five years old. Children develop more rapidly during the first five years of life than at any other time. The EYFS framework ensures they receive the best possible start by focusing on seven key areas of learning and development, which are divided into Prime Areas and Specific Areas.

Prime Areas of Learning

These are the most essential areas for your child’s healthy development and future learning. They form the foundation for all other learning:

1. Communication and Language

Developing listening, attention, understanding, and speaking skills.

2. Physical Development

Improving coordination, movement, and understanding the importance of health and self-care.

3. Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Building confidence, managing feelings, and forming positive relationships.

Specific Areas of Learning

These areas build on the Prime Areas and help children develop skills for school and life:

4. Literacy
Encouraging reading and writing skills through stories, sounds, and letters.

5.Mathematics
Learning about numbers, counting, shapes, space, and measures.

6. Understanding the World
Exploring people, places, technology, and the natural world.

7. Expressive Arts and Design
Developing creativity through art, music, movement, and imaginative play.
