Welcome to Nursery Class!
Our nursery children learn through exciting and engaging activities which are planned to motivate and inspire our young learners through exploring their own interests and areas of enjoyment.
Our School Day
FROM SEPTEMBER 2023 WE ARE OFFERING 30 HOURS PROVISION AND BOOKABLE HALF DAY (3 HOURS) PROVISION at a cost of £15 per session
Our 26 place nursery offers universal 15 hours provision and 30 hours childcare provision to our children. Our sessions for universal 15 hours run from 8.50am to 11.50 pm from Monday and Friday. Our 30 hours childcare provision runs into the afternoon each day until 3.00pm. If you are not eligible for 30 hours childcare you may book additional afternoon sessions at a cost of £15 per half day session (12 – 3pm) on any day by contacting the school office to book.
Each day starts at 8.50am when children come into class and have breakfast with their friends. Our session is made up of both indoor and outdoor child-initiated learning time and short bursts of adult directed teaching where adults support children in developing key skills. We recognise how important talking is to young children so we regularly set up activities to encourage children to engage with their peers and adults, developing relationships and their vocabulary. Children’s communication and language skills underpin everything that they go on to achieve in their life, so we place a high value in encouraging our children to develop a love of books early on. We do this through fun and engaging stories, role-play activities, costumes and repeat reading! Once children know a story well, they will often re-tell the story to themselves and their friends. Towards the end of the year, we begin to develop children’s awareness of phonics through Little Wandle in order to prepare the foundations for their Reception year. Early mathematics skills are also taught through a range of exciting songs and games, both adult and child initiated. These encourage counting, number recognition and an awareness of shape and measure.
Through out the week our 30 hours childcare nursery children stay for lunch where they have either a packed lunch or a school meal. Our school meals offer three options to choose from: two hot and one cold and cost £2.50 per day.
We end our nursery session with circle time where children sing some of their favourite songs, listen to a class story and play games where they can practise their turn taking, listening and attention and speaking skills.
Our Curriculum
In Nursery, we follow children’s interests to develop their learning through play as well as teaching important skills and knowledge through overarching half-termly topics. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets standards for the learning, development and care of your child from birth to 5 years old, ensuring they are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to progress onto the next stage of their development.
In the Early Years phase at Leadgate Primary School, our EYFS curriculum is personalised to the developmental stages of our children. You can view this here. To find out more information about how we assess, adapt and plan for our children please visit our Early Years page here.
Our half-termly topics incorporate the skills and knowledge children need to learn, appropriate to their developmental stage.
