Giving Every Child a Voice
At Leadgate Primary School, we believe that every child should have the opportunity to share their ideas, contribute to school life and help make positive changes within our school community.
Our School Council plays a vital role in representing the views of pupils and ensuring that children’s voices are heard. Through the School Council, pupils develop important leadership skills, learn how to work collaboratively and gain first-hand experience of democracy in action.
What is the School Council?
The School Council is a group of elected representatives from across the school who meet regularly to discuss ideas, suggestions and issues that are important to pupils.
Members listen to the views of their classmates, share ideas and work together to improve school life. They play an active role in decision-making and help to promote a positive, inclusive and supportive school environment.
How Are Representatives Chosen?
Each year, children have the opportunity to stand as candidates for the School Council.
Candidates may:
- Prepare a speech explaining why they would make a good representative.
- Share their ideas for improving the school.
- Answer questions from their peers.
Pupils then take part in a democratic vote to elect their class representative. This process helps children understand the importance of elections, fairness and representation.
School Council and British Values
The work of our School Council helps promote the Fundamental British Values throughout school life.
Democracy
