In Year 1, children continue their exciting learning journey with Miss Morgan. Building on the strong foundations established in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), we provide a balanced approach that provides opportunities for both child-initiated learning through continuous provision and more formal teaching. This helps secure the essential foundations for future learning . We ensure children have opportunities for practical, hands-on experiences alongside structured lessons, supporting curiosity, independence, and a love of learning as children take their next steps.

Phonics and Early Reading
We place a strong emphasis on developing confident, fluent readers through high-quality phonics teaching. Our daily phonics sessions follow a structured approach using Little Wandle. This helps children build secure knowledge of sounds and blending skills. Alongside phonics, we nurture a love of reading by sharing engaging stories, encouraging discussion, and providing opportunities for children to explore books independently. These early reading experiences lay the foundation for lifelong literacy, supporting both comprehension and enjoyment of reading.
Mathematics
In Year 1, we focus on building strong foundations in mathematics through practical, hands-on learning. Children explore key concepts such as number, addition, subtraction, and shape using real-life objects and interactive activities. Practical experiences, like counting with everyday items, measuring in the classroom, and solving problems through games, help pupils understand how maths is used in the world around them. Our approach encourages curiosity, confidence, and problem-solving skills alongside developing Key Instant Recall Facts including knowing the number bonds to 10, doubles and halves to 10 and all of the days of the week.
